Tai Chi in the Park 2018

Monday, 6th August 2018

Over 120 people turned up at Victoria Park in Nelson for the first free summer Tai Chi session last Tuesday.

The event was officially opened by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Pendle, Councillor Ken Turner and Ms Jayne Mills.

They were also joined by the Chief Executive of Pendle Leisure Trust, Alison Goode, and other supporters and sponsors of the free sessions, including Up & Active, Pendle Council, Lancashire County Council and Marsden Building Society.

The event launch also included a special blessing incorporating a traditional Chinese Lion Dance performance.

Lighthouse Tai Chi instructor, David Pelling, said: “Last Summer over 120 people took part on the opening day alone, and there were nearly 400 people who took part in total over the four weeks. These included people of all ages, from 6 to 96 and all abilities.”

“Today’s turnout has been fantastic. There has been an overwhelming response and everyone is welcome to join us again for the next few weeks to do as much or little as they want.”

With fellow instructor, Helena Kean, together, they regularly teach up to 300 people every week at different venues throughout East Lancashire, including Pendle Leisure Trust’s three centres – Pendle Wavelengths, Pendle Leisure Centre and West Craven Sports Centre.

The free sessions in Victoria Park help them to reach out further into the community and sessions are being held every Tuesday throughout August, 1.30pm – 2.30pm, on the bowling green behind the Pavillion Café off Carr Road, Nelson. No need to book, just turn up.
