Pendle Wavelengths Celebrates 30th Anniversary in Style

Wednesday, 17th July 2019

Hundreds of people enjoyed a nostalgic trip down memory lane to mark Pendle Wavelengths’ 30th Anniversary.

Last Friday, Pendle Leisure Trust took customers back in time to 1989 to when the Nelson leisure pool first opened, with entry to all pool activities that day – Early Birds/Ladies Only/Aquarhythmics/Public Swimming – at 1989 prices.

Between 7pm and 9pm, the once very popular pool disco was re-introduced with pool and poolside party games and competitions and even the café staff and lifeguards helped to set the scene by wearing uniforms dating back to the era.

Visitors took a trip down ‘Memory Lane’ as they walked along the corridor to the pool with a collection of old photos spanning the last three decades and former customers and members of staff were also invited to take a trip back in time to when they enjoyed many hours at the leisure pool.

Alison Dow, Pendle Wavelengths’ Assistant Manager, said: “The day was a huge success and it was so nice to see so many former members of staff and customers come along to celebrate and see if they could spot themselves in the many photos we had on display.

Many of our Aquarhythmics customers came dressed in brightly coloured leg warmers and tutus for their class, exercising to tunes from the 80s and one customer, who years ago, completed one of our annual swim challenges – to swim the equivalent distance of the English Channel - turned up to do a few lengths.

The pool disco was a real hit with both adults and children who took part in float races and dancing competitions just like they used to do years ago. In fact, this was such a success that we are going to re-introduce these pool discos, starting with a Back To School Disco on Friday, September 6th.”
