Mayor of Pendle’s Walking Football Challenge Raises Almost £200

Thursday, 22nd February 2018

Almost £200 was raised for the Mayor of Pendle’s Charity from a Walking Football Challenge organised by Pendle Leisure Trust’s Up and Active team.

While the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor David Whalley, was talking to members of the Up and Active team about the sport, he suggested a game between himself and a group of councillors - and anyone else who wanted to get involved in a competition to raise money for his chosen fund - The Pendle Park Friends Groups.

The Mayor’s Walking Football Challenge Trophy was held at Primet Academy in Colne.

The day kicked-off with an hour for anyone who wanted to know more about the game and give it a go. This was followed by the group stages for the Mayor’s Challenge Trophy, and in between there was a one-off fun game between the Mayor and a group of his friends versus a group of Pendle Councillors, which provided lots of entertainment for the spectators – and a goal from the Mayor!

While the football competition was going on in the indoor sports hall, there were lots to keep the rest of the family entertained in the small hall with table tennis, games, activities and a fun inflatable.

Adrian Lamb, from Pendle’s Up and Active team said: “There were five teams of six players for the Walking Football Competition, plus another 14 players for the Mayor versus councillors game. There were another 40 people that turned up to watch and enjoy the activities in the small hall.

“There was a great atmosphere from start to finish in the main hall with spectators cheering on the football players. It was also a great opportunity to showcase the sport and what the Up and Active team do.”
