Celebrating 10 Years of Free Tai Chi in the Park

Thursday, 25th July 2024

Community health and wellbeing has been at the heart of the free Tai Chi in the park sessions organised every summer by Lighthouse instructors Helena and David.

This year’s events in Victoria Park, Nelson will be held on Thursdays 1st, 8th & 15th August at 1.30pm and Saturday 10th August at 10.30am. Thursday the 1st is the official launch with the Mayor & Mayoress of Pendle opening the event and a special performance by Pendle Ladies Choir before the Tai Chi at 2pm.

Helena, a former classical singer says, “I love both singing and Tai Chi and cannot think of a better way to feel good and lift my spirits than to experience both in the fabulous, natural setting of Victoria Park.”

Everyone is welcome to join in without booking or registering, and to try Tai Chi for free. You can do as much or as little as you want. Families are welcome. The events will happen rain or shine, so come prepared for British Summer weather.

For the last 10 years, Lighthouse have organized these events in August, to encourage people to keep active and enjoy healthy activities that are also friendly, fun and relaxing. With support from Up & Active and Pendle Leisure Trust, the events have provided an opportunity for people to find out about tai chi without having to book a lesson and see if it is suitable them.

The Pavilion Café have given their support every year to help make the events accessible to all abilities and Pendle Borough Council have provided the core funding, in addition to use of Pendle’s green spaces, to make Tai Chi in the Park a regular annual activity. The Marsden Building Society have also been a key supporter, ensuring the continuation of the sessions and supporting Lighthouse during the pandemic, so the events could be held with restrictions in place.

Lead instructor David says “This will be the last year that we organise the events ourselves. So, if you’ve always wanted to attend, this is the year to do it. In future, any park organisation or community events will be able to book us for one off sessions. We’re hoping to end our 10 years on a high, so please come down and join us”
