World Mental Health Day: How Exercise can Improve Your Mental Health

Friday, 9th October 2020

What a year it’s been! 2020 has been unpredictable to say the least, so it’s little surprise that the nation’s mental health has dipped since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Saturday 10th October is World Mental Health Day, so we’re focusing on ways we can use exercise to improve our mental health and well-being (it’s well known for its mood-boosting benefits, after all).

Gym - Hitting the gym is just one way you can add exercise to your routine. It offers you the freedom and flexibility to choose your workout, such as cardio or weights. It’s got everything you need to give you a workout from top to toe, so it’s a great choice if you’re the type of person who prefers to create your own plan and workout solo.

Classes – Fitness classes are ideal if you enjoy a more social setting. Lockdown meant many of us didn’t see friends or family for a while, so if you’re a social butterfly, a group workout could be just your cup of tea (plus, they’re great for maintaining motivation too). Fitness classes also offer lots of choice. From Yoga and Spinning to Boxercise and pool-based classes, you’re sure to find a workout that suits you.

Swimming – Swimming is a fantastic way to workout, and perhaps a little underrated. It works the whole body and is low impact too, so if you’re prone to injury or simply want something that’s not quite as strenuous, a dip in the pool is a great option.

Running – ‘Runners high’ is a term you’ve probably come across before and you’ll know just what we mean once you’ve finished your first run. Although finding the motivation to dig out your running shoes is hard (especially in the winter months), we promise you’ll feel so much better for it, mentally as well as physically. Plus, if running in the dark doesn’t appeal to you, why not head to your local athletics track? Fully floodlit, it’s a much safer environment.

Whichever form of exercise you choose, you’ll find your body releases endorphins when you work out. This is the feel-good hormone that lifts your mood and boosts your mental well-being. So on this World Mental Health Day, why not dig out your gym gear or swimming costume and do something that makes you feel good?

2020 may have been a disappointing year for some, but let’s aim to end the last part of the year on a high and feel good about ourselves – we deserve it!
