From more energy to improved mental health, getting fit isn’t always about getting a slimmer waist. Although aesthetic improvements are often a big motivation to get into shape, there are many perks that you may not have realised come hand in hand with exercise…
When we exercise, our bodies release endorphins, which are responsible for feelings of pleasure. You might find after a run you get a ‘runners high’. But you don’t have to run to achieve it, any form of exercise, from weight lifting to aerobics, can trigger this feel-good response after working out.
While dropping a few pounds can help us look better, feeling stronger or having more energy can also do us a world of good. From being able to keep up with the kids or achieving a PB – they’re all things that make us feel better as a result of exercise.
Research shows that people who exercise are less stressed than those who don’t (thanks to endorphins again!) Not only do they make us feel good but they help us to reduce our stress levels. So, the next time you’ve had a stressful day, why not hit the gym? It’s a great way to clear your head.
As well as improving your well-being and physical appearance, exercise improves your overall health too. It gets your heart pumping which, over time, improves its efficiency. The better your heart’s ability to pump blood around your body, the better your body performs & the healthier it will be.
Inspire your children
Keeping up with their children is often motivation for wanting to lose weight for many people. However, exercise also encourages your children be more active too! Their brains are like sponges and they learn from what’s around them, so by exercising regularly, you’re setting a good example.
As well as keeping your body in tip-top shape, exercise also improves balance, flexibility, coordination and motor control. Although strength & stamina are important factors of exercising, improving our balance etc. are key in keeping us healthy and free from injury as we age.
